Today we had the chance to the explore the Sungnam location of Code-G, a Gundam theme cafe that has franchises all over Korea.
I had gone to the Gundam cafe in Tokyo before and was a little disappointed, so I was curious to see what my experience would be this time. I am happy to report, it was awesome!
If you live in downtown Seoul, all of the locations are a little far, but honestly it’s worth it to come visit! Sungnam is a quiet residential area and the cafe wasn’t too crowded when we got here, there was only one family with two kids enthusiastically playing Tekken.
The cafe is lined with Gunpla from top to bottom, and you can tell the owner is passionate about keeping things organized and clean. When we arrived, the owner was assembling a model, and so was the family there, so it was very nice to see people actually using the space to carry out their hobby!
There is quite a large selection of models available for purchase, and although it is a little bit pricier than regular stores, they had a couple models that are sold out in almost every Gundam Base. Besides, the drink prices are incredible! We got 2 beers for 4,000 won. It really pays to leave downtown Seoul sometimes…
The store has various Gachapon which were up to date and had a nice variety, and it also has a very wide array of Gundam literature! Some manga is in Japanese, and they have a wide selection of novels in Korean. They don’t offer Gundam theme desserts or food, but some of the cups and coasters have their logo on it. I found their branding to be exceptional!
There are also multiple videogames to choose from. One station offers at least 50 classic arcade games, and there is also a large TV where you can play Battlegrounds, or several playstation 3 games. They also offer traditional boardgames if you are into that too!
The overall atmosphere was really warm and inviting. If it was closer to where I live I would definitely be a regular at this place. What really surprised me the most was the owner, who treated us with incredible kindness! He gave us a free americano coupon and an awesome notebook. He also let us know that the location often hosts Gunpla tournaments that are quite popular, and that on Fridays they close at 4am, so more adult fanatics can enjoy playing games and building models with a glass of beer.
Follow this location of Code-G on instagram @code_g_sungnam, and make the time to visit one day! It was an awesome time and I will definitely come again.
